Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the right to contest certain calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
