When Beachgoers Fled Attack, Viral Image Shows Beach Patrol Dashing ‘Pedal to the Metal’ To the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong resident of Bondi, views the iconic shoreline as her personal space. On a recent Sunday evening, she, similar to other neighbors, heard loud noises echoing through the community.

“Everyone did, but I reasoned it was too light and no one could see them,” Ching recounts. Exiting her home, she saw people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The faces on display made it clear trouble had occurred.

As she stood on the street, conversing with a pair who had hurried up the hill still dripping wet, she noticed someone coming up from behind. It was a lifeguard, dashing in the direction of Bondi barefoot from the nearby Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while transporting a defibrillator.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I just saw this flash of blue,” Ching describes. “He was simply racing by. He was the only one running in the path that all the others was trying to flee, and hauling that sizeable pack and without footwear … He’s running into something that undoubtedly every part of you would instruct you to go in the other direction.

“Without a second thought, but just completely maximum effort sprinting.”

An Iconic Image of Heroism Amidst Chaos

The photograph Ching captured of the lifeguard, now known to be Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as one of many instances of heroism in the wake of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, another lifeguard, explained that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to back up the other members at Bondi, as well as to work with surf lifesavers, police and medical teams treating many the injured.

Community Outpouring and Assistance

Doolan’s actions was just one of many to emerge from the community, with the beach facility next to the location of the attack transforming into a temporary treatment center. Accounts show that other team members were also seen taking action, including entering the surf to save people in distress.

In the days after the attack, comments of appreciation flooded in. An online statement conveyed appreciation for the individuals who showed that “kindness will always overcome hatred”.

The group of lifeguards later shared a communication, saying they were “still trying to comprehend what transpired”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your supportive words and support. We are deeply moved by the kindness for our responders,” the team stated. “In time, we will recount our experiences in the hope that it aids those affected.”

Local Government Commendation

Waverley council, the administrative organization that employs many permanent lifeguards, said that the staff acted heroically from the moment the violence commenced until late that evening.

“There have been so many powerful accounts, but the popular image of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help save lives is incredible,” commented a council representative.

“Our lifeguards show dedication every day in maintaining the safety of our world-famous shores protected for visitors, but what we saw on Sunday should be commended.

“While we mourn and grapple with the horror of this brutal and barbaric act of violence, I think it is vital that we reflect on just how much good we have seen in the presence of such hatred.”
