As stated by a senior military official, the US armed forces executed a lethal strike on a boat in the Pacific Ocean, killing four people.
“A US joint task force carried out a deadly attack on a craft linked to a Designated Terrorist Organization in open sea. Intelligence verified the vessel was transiting along a established narco-trafficking route and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations. A total of four male drug traffickers were eliminated, and no US military forces were injured.”
This announcement comes a day after an announcement regarding a blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers to and from Venezuela. In that announcement on social media, the US president alleged Venezuela of using oil profits to fund narcotics smuggling and other crimes, pledging to escalate the military presence.
Just on the previous day, US defense officials stated it had carried out strikes on three boats suspected of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, killing eight people. Beginning on 2 September, over 20 strikes have killed at least 99 individuals, most off the coast of Venezuela.
The administration has encountered increasing demands to make public video of a September 2nd vessel attack. But, officials have refused to do so. The administration has defended its campaign as a success, arguing it has prevented drugs from reaching US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is exceeding the limits of legal military action.
While the administration has stated the operation is about halting drugs headed to the US, remarks from a senior aide seemed to suggest a broader political aim. In a recently published interview, the senior advisor said the leader “aims to keep on destroying vessels until the Venezuelan president cries uncle.”
This suggests the series of strikes may be linked to a push to remove Venezuela's sitting government.
