A large-scale search and rescue operation is currently under way in the Caribbean waters for two lost sailing vessels transporting humanitarian supplies en route from Mexico to Cuba.

Naval Search Efforts Deployed

Mexico has sent naval teams and military search aircraft to search for the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were had on board a minimum of 9 crew members, according to a official statement.

The ships had been projected to make landfall in Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and zero verification of their docking, the statement clarified.

The Situation of Humanitarian Support to the Nation

The island nation has depended significantly on aid convoys from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the island grapples with repeated national electricity failures.

"The captains and crews are veteran seafarers, and each boat are fitted with suitable safety systems and communication devices," a spokesperson associated with the mission said.

The nine crew members are nationals of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Officials said it has been in touch with maritime rescue coordination centres from those nations along with their diplomatic representatives.

"Our team is co-operating fully with the authorities and are still optimistic in the capability of the sailors to reach Havana safely," the statement continued.

Previous Relief Delivery

Just days before, the Cuban authorities widely celebrated and officially received a different ship that had carried 14 tonnes of donated goods to the country.

That vessel, nicknamed "a new Granma" following the name of the vessel in which Castro came back to Cuba to begin the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, carried solar panels, drugs, infant formula, bicycles and food.

Broader Geopolitical Context

Volunteers and NGOs have largely spearheaded attempts to bring essential supplies to Cuba since January, when a energy blockade on the country began.

International organizations have since raised alarms about ""critical" lack of essential goods, with in excess of 50,000 operations postponed in Cuba due to energy rationing.

Foreign policy pressure have been ramped up in recent months, with statements from various officials highlighting the delicate state of relations.

Responding to certain statements, a high-ranking official from Cuba stated firmly that "the governance model of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Indications suggest that preliminary steps of discussions commenced, although their current progress remains uncertain.

The naval forces affirmed it was pledged to using the full extent of its capabilities at its disposal to discover the vessels and secure the safety of the crews.

As of now, there has been no public statement on the missing boats by the Cuban leadership.
