Well, what did you think of this year in your home? Was it truly wonderful as you pretended on social media? Overflowing with top marks for the children and wild costume celebrations for the grownups? Or perhaps it was a ocean of disappointment with only occasional entertaining moments? And was any of it authentic, or have we all become seven-fingered synthetic personas with unrealistic smiles?
I have gathered everyone for a chat, willing or unwilling, to discuss the paramount thing in any given year: what titles we played the most. Let's get started:
Pikmin
"Why can't you pick just one?"
"It’s not my definitive list."
Meanwhile, on mobile, her go-to has been Cityscapes and "searching for decent healthcare."
"Digitally?"
"In reality."
Overwatch
"I refuse to play games on my phone." He took umbrage that the question was posed. Fair enough.
Resident Evil Biohazard
She's attempting to get into drama school, but when she took a break from vocals, she was playing Resident Evil. She also spoke at length in great detail about her achievements on The Sims, where her avatar has a blooming utopia with significantly better healthcare than her eldest sister has in real life.
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She started the year at sixty percent completion and ended it at eighty-two percent. It's a long haul not a sprint for her. Her phone game: something called Woodle, where you have to extract pins.
Minecraft
Whenever I see my 21-year-old son playing Minecraft, I set about him like a cross between a classic comedy bit. When he protests, I reply that I am doing this to build character so he can grow up and play games for grownups. This defines our Scottish father/son relationship.
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
There was no contest for this one. She is incredible. More impressive than I was at classic rhythm games in my prime.
Marvel Snap
No other game compared to the hours I spent on this remarkably well-crafted card game digital pastime, with its regularly updated range of cards and game variations.
Marvel Snap
The catch about games that endlessly add to their range is you eventually realize and understand it is all just an attempt to suck you into compulsion-based microtransactions. So affection became resentment halfway through the year and it was deleted.
Doom: The Dark Ages
Glorious reinvention of a legendary franchise. Engrossing atmosphere from the off. I wish I could eviscerate my problems so effectively in real life.
Blue Prince
I decline to rush this gorgeous, distinctive game and I just lacked the focused attention to give it what it deserved earlier this year. With family visits over the festive period, I plan to dive into this in the wee small hours after evening drinks.
Balatro
I'm aware Balatro was last year's sleeper hit, but I was a late adopter. And it is exceptional. It just gets absolutely everything right. Crazy Poker is a fantastic concept, but the abilities behind the different joker cards are so inventive it has become a game I literally would play at any hour. Throw in the wittiness of the card design, and this is an absolute pinnacle of gaming. I dream of being stuck in a small space for hours just so I have nothing to do but play it.
Outer Worlds 2
I endured a minor pile-on when I wrote about how a specific bug in another game ruined the experience for me, but that other title is still a gargantuan gaming achievement in terms of production values – which I valued even more after experiencing Outer Worlds 2. So my appreciation goes out to the commenter who took the time to contact me to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "poorly reasoned". I present that in the exact way, because I appreciate the effort, and she is obviously an sharp judge of character.
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Alright. Give me a bastard-hard exploration-focused thing and provide little guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "look around". How delightful. I acknowledge that it looks ace and is flawless if you are into the genre, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I am less interested in in my mid-fifties. I was around back when all games were like this, and my patience is gone. It was okay when I was a kid, but the same could be said for many outdated things.
Toss-up between corporate partnerships that raised eyebrows, and expensive game releases. Both ethically dubious and concerning.
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all make interesting names shouted from the doorstep at tea time.
Right Thumb Joint. Seriously. I don’t know if it’s because of video games or endless scrolling, but it is sore like the mines of sulphur in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs protected back in the past.
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to wait patiently until the cows come home.
The Witcher 4.
