In October of last year, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the network introduced a completely new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. At a time often defined by cynicism, this show's earnestness struck a chord and propelled it a surprise hit.
In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who found the show and championed its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about observing this endearing family navigate their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to help comedy break out of its prevailing cynical streak. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well catalyze that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to bask in the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
