Israel's security cabinet has given its endorsement to the recognition of nineteen fresh outposts in the disputed Palestinian territories, marking a sustained campaign for settlement expansion.
Far-right Treasury Chief Bezalel Smotrich, who lives in a settlement and proposed the step in concert with Defense Chief Israel Katz, asserted that the approval was intended for blocking the formation of a Palestinian state.
It is important to note that Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank are considered illegal.
The decision has sparked condemnation from Saudi Arabia. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has commented that Israel's "relentless" settlement expansion fuels frictions, limits Palestinians' use of land, and jeopardizes the viability of a sovereign Palestinian state.
Clashes in the region has surged since the war in the Gaza Strip started in October 2023, intensifying fears that settlement expansion could entrench Israel's occupation and weaken the possibility for a two-state solution.
The two-state solution refers to the formation of a State of Palestine in the Palestinian territories, with East Jerusalem as its capital, largely along the lines that were in place prior to the 1967 Six-Day Middle East war.
Since coming to power in 2022, the incumbent government in Jerusalem has greatly accelerated the approval of fresh communities and begun the legalisation process for unauthorised settler outposts, designating them as "extensions" of existing settlements.
The latest approval brings the total number of settlements authorized over the past three years to sixty-nine, per the figures from the Finance Minister.
These decisions are announced only a few days after the United Nations stated that construction in settlements had reached its peak since 2017.
The newest batch of authorizations includes the rebuilding of a pair of settlements — Ganim and Kadim — which were evacuated about in 2005.
Previously, Israel approved twenty-two new settlements in the occupied West Bank - what was the biggest wave of approvals in many years.
Furthermore, the government also approved plans last summer to construct over three thousand housing units in the so-called E1 project between the capital and the Maale Adumim community, a project that had been on hold for many years amid strong international opposition.
On that occasion, the Finance Minister said it would "bury the notion of a Palestinian state."
Roughly 700,000 settlers dwell in approximately 160 settlements in the occupied territories, according to the Israeli monitoring organization Peace Now. This is land that Palestinians aspire to have for a prospective independent state.
This ongoing construction has provoked neighboring countries who have repeatedly argued it undermines hopes for a peaceful two-state outcome.
It has furthermore sparked fears about the eventual incorporation of the occupied West Bank.
Former American President Donald Trump had once admonished Israel about such a move, telling a publication that Israel would forfeit all its support from the United States if it occurred.
Recently, the UK - along with other countries such as Australia and Canada - recognised a Palestinian state, a significant although primarily ceremonial adjustment in official stance.
Israel opposed the move, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declaring that a sovereign Palestine "is off the table."
