The Details Known About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Shooting

At least 16 individuals lost their lives and over 40 were wounded when attackers fired on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police have labeled a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities stands at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were taken to hospital.

The deceased are still awaiting formally identified, but authorities state their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.

Listed are the victims who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She recounted the events before the shooting, saying they were standing when the shooting began. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, the Foreign Minister expressed that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality during the attack, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with several in a critical state. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
