Taliban Utilized Discarded British Technology to Find Afghans Who Worked Alongside Allied Forces, Inquiry Hears

A whistleblower has disclosed the Afghan leak inquiry that British authorities abandoned classified technology enabling the militant group to locate Afghans who collaborated with western forces.

Information Leak Endangers Thousands in Danger

The source, identified as Person A, stated that individuals impacted by the security lapse were instructed to change residences and change their phone numbers to avoid detection from militant forces.

Members of Parliament are currently examining the Conservative government's response of a catastrophic leak of personal details concerning approximately 19k individuals who had requested to move to the United Kingdom to flee militant rule.

The Information Breach Was Discovered

A data file including private information, comprising names, addresses and sometimes family information, was accidentally leaked by a staff member employed at special operations center in February 2022.

The leak was discovered months later, when identities of multiple applicants who had applied to relocate to the UK appeared on Facebook.

Taliban Capabilities

“There seems to be a misunderstanding that the Taliban lack comparable resources that we have,” she told the committee.

Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; it's in their hands. Once they acquire mobile details, they can locate your exact position. This is exactly how the unit accomplished.”

During testimony about if militant forces had access to advanced decryption, the whistleblower declared: “They possess all resources.”

Aftermath of the Data Breach

Preliminary research provided to the committee estimated that at least 49 relatives and associates of Afghans affected by the incident had been killed.

A legal restriction about the incident was enacted in late 2023 and prevented relevant facts regarding the matter from public disclosure until mid-2025.

Protective Actions

Because she was restricted, the source and the non-governmental organization she was working with advised affected households they were assisting that they had “apprehensions that mobile communications had been breached”.

“We recommended that they relocate where feasible and switched their phone numbers. These represented the two main details that, if the Taliban acquired this information, would cause their location being found,” Person A explained.

Contested Findings

The source contested that internal investigation performed by an ex-government employee had been wrong to conclude that the obtaining of the records by the regime was “not significantly alter present danger”.

“The crucial point is that these individuals are in hiding from the Taliban; they are in hiding. The primary issue involves their previous employment.”

Person A described terrible violence endured by affected individuals, comprising electric shock torture, interrogation techniques, and severe beatings.

“There are cases of toddlers who have had bones crushed to pressure the family to reveal locations,” Person A stated.
