Red Cross Assists Militant Group in Recovery for Remains of Captives in Gaza Strip

A Red Cross official confirmed that its representatives joined Hamas officials into areas of Gaza currently controlled by Israeli military authority to facilitate the hunt for the remains of individuals held captive.

Ceasefire Terms and Hostage Bodies Return

Under the truce negotiated by the United States, which began on October 10, the group is obligated to return the bodies of all Israeli hostages as soon as possible. In exchange, Israel has agreed to hand over the remains of 15 Palestinians for each Israeli.

Hamas has to date returned the bodies of 15 of those held captive but none in the past five days, as some of those bodies are thought to be in locations past the ceasefire boundary marking the temporary truce line.

“Upon the appeal of the involved sides, the Red Cross joined a party to the conflict as the group searched for the bodies of the deceased individuals past the IDF-designated ‘yellow line’,” stated a spokesperson for the organization.

The spokesperson continued: “The parties to the hostilities determined the modalities of the mission and entrusted the Red Cross to act as a impartial mediator. We was had no part in those negotiations.”

She further explained: “Our team was not involved in the search for the bodies nor does it take part in the retrieval of remains.”

As the two-day window neared, the group, joined by the Red Cross, teamed up with Egyptian teams, who were authorised by Israel to search for remains beyond the line marking the Israeli military’s pullback inside Gaza. An official representative said the Egyptian team would use excavator machines and vehicles in the operation.

Difficulties in Finding Hostage Bodies

The search for the remains of individuals taken captive has turned into one of the most sensitive matters in the truce agreed between the two sides. However, the effort to find the remains has been challenging from the beginning, given the presence of an estimated enormous amount of debris across the strip, where, as per health officials, at least 10,000 residents are recorded as unaccounted for, buried under the debris.

Diverging Claims on Remains Location

Hamas has stated it does not know the precise whereabouts of all the bodies, saying it has been unable to communicate with a number of its teams that had been detaining the hostages and were allegedly killed during Israeli bombardments.
