New research indicates that people who stop using popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People purchasing such drugs should be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.
The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the accelerated rebound.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
