No fewer than 13 passengers perish and 98 injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” declared the head of state.

The leader announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked persistent apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an urgent pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This pause was requested until the completion of a full technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in full accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
