New Year Celebrants Urged to Dress Warmly with Snow Forecast Throughout the UK

Meteorologists are saying a frosty commencement to the new year, with snow expected across much of the UK. Revelers are being urged to bundle up as near-freezing temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Celebrations Continue Amid Warnings

The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay events are set to go ahead, following last year's calling-off. This comes despite weather alerts for snow over northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those partying, so warmer clothes will be needed," said the Met Office.

Fireworks Under Clear but Frosty Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is set to be suited to fireworks shows, with a lack of precipitation and good visibility. Temperatures are forecast to be low, so additional clothing a necessity, said forecasters.

In more northern areas, conditions will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for seeing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Broad Snow Warnings for Friday

As we enter Friday, weather warnings have been issued across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• People are advised to allow extra time for travel on the road.
• Delays and cancellations are expected on public transport.

Temperatures Expected to Drop Further

With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are expected to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are expected to batter the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Health Advisories Activated

Meanwhile, amber-level health advisories are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities said this indicated the weather was expected to trigger significant impacts across the NHS and care systems. This involves a potential rise in the mortality rate among the elderly or unwell or those 65 and older.

The advice for all is clear: to welcome the new year in safely, dressing for the cold is completely key.
