The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a team that had conceded a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. This Year's Efforts Unraveling?
Was the team's progress coming unstitched, or was there ever a thread keeping it intact to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, before he admitted that the club had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were about to receive for accounting issues. Speculation that he could resign were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.
Lazio became as messy during matches as they were off it, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other first five games, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, it's been difficult to ascertain if they are improving or collapsing.
Matteo's Unexpected Return
A single player continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio this season. He spent the last one with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, Lazio were pushing for him to extend his stay a while longer. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. He joined initially under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 matches in the league for Lazio in 2022-23, almost all of those as a substitute. Uncovering His True Position
Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to work out the exact type of the player's talent. Billed as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile as center forward.
