Liverpool's Captain Concedes Squad Faces Crisis, Questions Players on Responsibility

The Liverpool skipper has delivered a blunt evaluation of the club's woeful title defence, admitting the title holders are in a mess and failing head coach Slot while doubting whether all squad members is taking responsibility for the team’s slump.

“We had a great build-up to the match but in a fixture you are dealing with reality and the facts are we conceded a free-kick in the opening period and a terrible goal at the start of the second half,” said Van Dijk. “As a team, we're certainly letting him down, but we’ve disappointed ourselves as well. You look at yourself first and then you support teammates, you help each other get out of this crisis because at the moment it is a mess – that's the reality.

Van Dijk’s Demands: Step Up

The skipper typically addresses the media after a game as part of his duties as team leader. This time was distinct, however. He spoke was much louder – audible enough that any teammate in the stadium corridors could listen in – and he expressed visible fury while challenging the squad to react. “Anger is justified,” he insisted. “The key point for me is that each individual has to be accountable.” Asked whether that is happening, Van Dijk answered: “It's unclear. But it's essential. It’s the main thing I want the players to do. It’s not easy during tough periods but we have to do it if we want to get out of this.”

Squad Investment and Broader Issues

Liverpool invested almost £450m to replenish a title-winning squad in the off-season but have gone backwards, with several high-profile signings failing to make an impact so far. Van Dijk maintained that Liverpool’s issues go beyond the new recruits. “It’s tough for all involved,” he said. “My expectation is for each player to be answerable on the field. We have to do that in order to push each other, to make each other better. If a teammate presses, you have to follow the effort. It’s basic things but they're lacking enough.”

Appeal to Stick Together

The Dutchman continued: “In the current term we lack any consistency, we allow far too many goals, we are losing battles and all share the blame for it and I trust this is recognized. It's vital to take responsibility to reverse the situation and it is easy to point fingers but unity is essential. We have been through it together and won the league and everyone was part of it, and during a challenging phase you must remain united and avoid blaming others.

“You have to be a man and face the toughness and persist, repeatedly because surrendering is not an option then you are at the wrong place in my view, because this club has been going through many adversity over those years and we’ve consistently emerged of it. However, that doesn't imply it is easy, it’s tiring but there is no other way.”

Looking Ahead

The upcoming match in the domestic league is a trip to West Ham next Sunday, after the Champions League fixture of the Dutch side in the European competition. Van Dijk said: “Wednesday is another game so how should I respond, dwell on the loss? Certainly not, I'll go home and try to think how we can turn this around and I trust that is the collective focus as well.”
