The acclaimed police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its 7th season, confirmed by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-episode series written by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the production team.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together next year."

The last series wrapped up in recent years with a final episode that drew in over 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been circulating for some time, but confirmation only arrived this week.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

The seventh season begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to combat misconduct within the police force.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most delicate case so far."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer celebrated for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of abusing his position to become a offender.

Yet, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still active in the shadows, the teaser suggested.

In a statement, the creator commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had countless fans track the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a new season."

He added: "Misconduct in this country was thought to be over while the series was off air, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston called appearing in the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Not only the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he added.

Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is back! Can't wait to work with the creator, Martin and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor noted: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming next year."

"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected plot developments."

Show History

Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Stephen Graham.

Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will hit screens.

The conclusion of season six drew the extended plot about the search for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and producers indicated at the moment there were no plans for further series.

However, the network announced on this week that a new season is now in development.
