Joshua Doubles Down on Controversial ‘Kill’ Comments Towards Jake Paul

Anthony Joshua and Jake Paul face off
The YouTuber-turned-boxer is set to fight a significant challenge against former world titleholder Anthony Joshua.

Anthony Joshua stood by his much-discussed remarks about being prepared to “kill” his opponent during a media gathering in Miami on midweek.

The remarks were first made on the previous day when the boxer was questioned if he would show restraint against Paul, replying that “if I can kill you, I'll kill”.

The upcoming bout against the internet personality turned fighter has sparked criticism over safety concerns and the size difference between the two competitors.

Fury Calls AJ a “Classless Loser”

Former world heavyweight champion The Gypsy King labeled Anthony Joshua a “classless loser” for his inflammatory rhetoric.

But Joshua, justified his stance: “This is my profession, we fight. We have a license that permits extreme violence.

“I'm sure many people don't comprehend it but this is what my job is. I take pleasure in what I do. Whatever happens, happens - as long as my hand is held high, that's what's important, respectfully.”

He stated, “That's just the mentality we have to have as warriors. I'm unsure if other boxers think that way. Perhaps they're a bit more tame. The way my mind works. When you're in the ring, it's a dangerous thing. Everything can happen.”

“You pray your opponent exits the ring unharmed, but if they don't, you still have to go to bed knowing you just did your job. It was purely professional.”

Paul's Incendiary Response

Jake Paul, a massive underdog in the heavyweight contest as a natural lighter fighter, was equally fiery in his reply.

“This is a contemporary gladiator sport,” he declared. “I'm prepared. I want his most powerful punches. I want there to be no excuses when it's all over. We should kill each other.”

Joshua will face his opponent, 28, at Florida's arena in a bout many regard as a major mismatch, with some arguing it should have been sanctioned as an non-professional fight.

The official fight will be contested over 8 3-minute stanzas using regular 10oz gloves, with a stipulated weight limit for the former champion.

Joshua Claims He Was “Brought In to Rescue” The Sport

Despite the graphic terminology used, the fighter claimed he has been “brought in to rescue” the sport of boxing.

“They want me to halt the Jake Paul show and I comprehend it and that's why I have to carry the sport on my back in this bout,” he concluded.

The event also had lighter moments, with AJ laughing as his rival sang ‘London Bridge Is Falling Down’ to him.

The face-off passed without incident, with Paul striking a odd pose before Joshua remained calm and lightly touched Paul's chain.

Paul & Joshua Dismiss Pre-Arranged Claims

The unusual aspect of this fight has led to rumors about its authenticity, including claims that he may be prohibited from knocking Paul out.

“There's nothing in the contract, Joshua can attest to it. We're going to battle,” Paul insisted.

Joshua, sporting a valuable necklace, jokingly remarked, “The only thing in the contract that got my attention was the payment.”

He has stated on social media that the fight earnings will be exceptionally high.

Largest Upset in Sport's History?

Paul first made his name as an online prankster, gathering a massive social media following.

He has never fought anyone of the former champion's pedigree but maintained that his opponent would not underestimate him.

“It's a wise move on his part,” he commented. “This could possibly be, and will be, the largest defeat of his life.”

A win for the underdog would be arguably the biggest upset in the sport's history.

It would certainly leave an indelible stain on his legacy, but the athlete stated it would not mean retirement.

“I would return again, shake it off,” he said. “I'll be main eventing again in a year or two. It is what it is. I'm a competitor in the sport.”
