Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”

It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he is reported as serious yet stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”

New York police issued security footage earlier this week of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries according to reports.

The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday morning near Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.

Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse just had a baby.

“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.

He joined the Jets as a new signing in March and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a practice session on 2 August and was carted from the field.

Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he attends every game. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in 2019. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
