Gareth Southgate Shares Focus on Youth Development Instead of Returning to Coaching

Sir Gareth Southgate has stated that he is not pursuing a comeback in football management, explaining that it would be tough to recreate the higher calling he experienced as England’s manager.

The former coach expressed his intention to dedicate his efforts toward supporting the next generation and addressing what he called a pervasive negative narrative now found in the country.

Exploring Fresh Opportunities Outside of Football

In a recent radio interview, Southgate was asked about speculation linking him with available jobs in the Premier League and elsewhere.

“I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” he answered. “Recreating that unique role won’t be easy. With 37 years in football behind me, I’m excited to identify fresh ways to create impact.”

Commitment to Mentorship

Prior to the publication of his forthcoming publication, Dear England: Lessons in Leadership, he stated that he is highly enthusiastic about offering guidance for teenagers, drawing on experiences from his time as leader of the England team between 2016 and 2024, as well as his role as a father.

Southgate feels that his time leading the national team, during which the team shifted from being deeply unpopular to greatly admired, holds wider relevance.

“We had a huge disconnect with the public when we started,” he noted. “People saw us as high-ego players but we were able to turn that around. I saw the power that the team had to bring people together of every community.”

Raising Children and Shaping the Next Generation

Drawing on his family life, Southgate observed: “You want to give your kids the best possible start, but there is a point when they don’t want to listen to parents any more. I experienced that in my house in the same way everybody else will … but I do think this is an important space for us.”

He continued: “There’s a negative narrative around our country at the moment and we’ve got to give young people hope, we’ve got to give them guidance. We’ve got incredible talent but we need to them to find the right role models, the right friendship groups because those decisions have such a big impact on the rest of their lives.”

Unity Over Conflict

He asserted that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the cultural focus often emphasizes disagreement.

“One can see why many feel disillusioned,” he commented. “Many areas face economic hardship, which naturally inspires demands for improvement. However, I’ve experienced the power of national unity. In the Covid crisis, acts of community support showed the country at its finest, proving our resilience when challenged.”

His upcoming publication, titled Dear England, is set to provide deeper reflections on guidance and public spirit based on his notable time in football.
