In the past, Barry featured at a lower division club. Today, he is focused supporting Thomas Tuchel claim the World Cup trophy in the upcoming tournament. His journey from athlete to trainer commenced with a voluntary role with the youth team. He recalls, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and he was hooked. He realized his calling.
The coach's journey has been remarkable. Starting in a senior role at Wigan, he developed a reputation through unique exercises and great man-management. His roles at clubs included elite sides, while also serving in coaching jobs abroad for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with legends including Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Now, with England, he's fully immersed, the “pinnacle” as he describes it.
“Everything starts with a dream … But I’m a believer that dedication shifts obstacles. You envision the goal but then you bring it down: ‘How do we do it, gradually?’ Our goal is the World Cup. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. We have to build a methodical process enabling us to have the best chance.”
Dedication, especially with the smallest details, defines Barry’s story. Putting in long hours day and night, he and Tuchel test boundaries. Their methods feature mental assessments, a heat-proof game model for the finals abroad, and building a true team. He stresses the England collective and dislikes phrases such as "break".
“This isn't a vacation or a break,” he explains. “We had to build something that attracts the squad and where they're challenged that returning to club duty feels easier.”
Barry describes himself and Tuchel as “very greedy”. “We want to dominate each element of play,” Barry affirms. “We strive to own every metre of the pitch and that's our focus most of our time to. Our responsibility not just to keep up with developments and to lead and create our own ones. This is continuous to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And to simplify complexity.
“We have 50 days together with the team prior to the World Cup. We need to execute a sophisticated style that offers a strategic upper hand and explain it thoroughly in that period. We need to progress from thought to data to understanding to action.
“To build a methodology enabling productivity in that window, we have to use all the time available after our appointment. When the squad is away, it's vital to develop bonds with them. It's essential to invest time in calls with players, we need to watch them play, understand them, connect with them. If we limit ourselves to that time, we won't succeed.”
He is getting ready for the final pair for the World Cup preliminaries – facing Serbia at home and in Albania. The team has secured a spot in the tournament by winning all six games and six clean sheets. However, they won't relax; quite the opposite. Now is the moment to strengthen the squad's character, to gain more impetus.
“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the style of play should represent all the positives from the top division,” he comments. “The physicality, the flexibility, the physicality, the work ethic. The England jersey should be harder than ever to get but comfortable to have on. It ought to be like a superhero's cape not protective gear.
“To ensure it's effortless, we have to give them an approach that enables them to play freely as they do in club games, that feels natural and lets them release restrictions. They need to reduce hesitation and focus more on action.
“There are emotional wins available to trainers in the first and final thirds – building from the defense, attacking high up. However, in midfield of the pitch, those 24 metres, we believe play has stagnated, particularly in the Premier League. All teams are well-prepared currently. They understand tactics – structured defenses. Our aim is to speed up play through midfield.”
Barry’s hunger for improvement is all-consuming. During his education for the top coaching badge, he felt anxious regarding the final talk, especially as his class included stars including former players. For self-improvement, he sought out difficult settings imaginable to improve his talks. Including a prison locally, where he also took inmates during an exercise.
He completed the course as the best in his year, and his research paper – about dead-ball situations, for which he analysed 16,154 throw-ins – was published. Lampard included won over and he hired Barry to his team with the Blues. When Lampard was sacked, it said plenty that the club got rid of virtually all of his coaches but not Barry.
His replacement with the club was Tuchel, and shortly after, they claimed the Champions League. After Tuchel's exit, Barry stayed on in the setup. Once Tuchel resurfaced with Bayern, he got Barry out from Chelsea to work together again. The Football Association view them as a partnership like previous management pairs.
