China Accuses United States of ‘Contradictory Stances’ Concerning Trade Levy Warning

The former US president’s most recent ultimatum to enforce an further full import duty on Chinese goods has been described as a “classic case” of US double standards, as stated by the Beijing administration.

A Commerce Ministry spokesperson also stated that Beijing could enact its own unrevealed “retaliatory steps” if the US President follows through on his warning, emphasizing that the country was “unafraid” of a possible commercial battle.

On Friday, Donald Trump retaliated at Beijing’s move to strengthen its regulations for foreign shipments of rare earth minerals, accusing China of “turning aggressive” and attempting to hold the international market “under its control”.

Furthermore, he warned to withdraw from a planned meeting with Beijing’s head of state President Xi, which was expected to take place during a meeting in Seoul later this month.

His statements on that day unsettled stock exchanges, with the S&P 500 closing down 2.7%, marking its largest decline since earlier this year.

The president’s words revived fears of a commercial dispute between the US and China.

This past spring, the respective governments had agreed to drop high import duties on each other’s goods, which had raised the prospect of bilateral trade stopping between the two countries.

This left, American import duties on Chinese imports facing an added 30% levy compared with the year’s onset, while US goods entering the country incur a ten percent duty.

China’s latest remarks – released by the Ministry of Commerce in the format of formal replies to journalist’s questions – reflected language from the zenith of the ongoing trade dispute.

Officials denounced US export restrictions on chips and semi-conductors while justifying China’s own overseas sale regulations on rare earths as “normal actions” to ensure national security and that of the global community.

Their representative stated that for “a long time”, the America had “expanded the interpretation” of domestic safety, misused overseas sale restrictions and “adopted biased policies against China.

“Resorting to tariff threats is not the correct approach to interact with China,” their representative stated.

“Beijing’s stance” on a import duty dispute has consistently been consistent: we wish to avoid one, but we are unafraid of one.”

The previous week, the Chinese government declared it was reinforcing overseas sale regulations on rare earth minerals and additional substances critical for advanced tech manufacturing.

The action was viewed as a significant step, as the country refines about ninety percent of the planet’s critical minerals, which are utilized in items such as solar panels and handheld devices.

Latest statements from the US and China are being seen by observers as a method of enhancing bargaining power ahead of upcoming negotiations.

It is unclear whether a talks between Donald Trump and President Xi, scheduled at a summit in Seoul before month’s end, will still proceed.
