British Broadcasting Corporation Gaza Programme Ruled a 'Major' Breach of Media Rules, Declares Broadcasting Watchdog

The BBC committed a "major breach" of media regulations by not revealing that the narrator of a programme about Gaza was the offspring of a Hamas official, as ruled by regulatory body Ofcom.

An inquiry by the broadcasting watchdog into the documentary titled Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone has determined that the documentary was "significantly deceptive".

The BBC's director general had already issued an apology, saying there had been "a major oversight in relation to truthfulness".

The authority has directed the corporation to broadcast a evening statement about its decisions.

"Given this constitutes a major infringement of our regulations, we are ordering the corporation to air a message of our determinations against it on BBC2 at 21:00, with a date to be confirmed," the regulator stated.

'Risk to Damage Credibility'

The authority's report declared: "Our investigation determined that the film's failure to disclose that the voice's male guardian held a post in the Hamas-run administration was substantially inaccurate.

"It meant that the public did not have critical information which may have been very significant to their evaluation of the presenter and the details he presented.

"Credibility is at the center of the bond between a media organization and its audience, particularly for a public service broadcaster such as the public broadcaster.

"This failing had the risk to undermine the exceptionally strong degrees of credibility that audiences would have placed in a BBC factual programme about the Israel-Gaza war."

The documentary was withdrawn from iPlayer in the month of February after the boy's familial connections emerged, and in this past July an broadcaster's internal assessment found it violated the organization's editorial guidelines on accuracy.

A corporation official commented: "The authority's determination is in accordance with the results of the corporation's inquiry, that there was a serious error in the programme in relation to the corporation's content standards on accuracy, which reflects regulation 2.2 of the regulator's media standards.

"We have apologised for this and we comply with the authority's determination in its entirety. We will comply with the penalty as soon as the schedule and wording are confirmed."
