Arrangements for Putin-Trump Meeting Postponed Shortly Following Hungarian Capital Talks Suggested

Currently exist "no preparations" for US President Donald Trump to meet Russia's Vladimir Putin "in the near term", a administration representative has announced.

This past week the US president said he and the Kremlin leader would conduct negotiations in Hungary's capital soon to examine the ongoing hostilities.

A preparatory meeting between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur recently - but the White House stated the two had had a "positive" discussion and that a meeting was not "needed".

The administration did not share additional specifics on why the talks had been put on hold.

Earlier Events

Trump had discussed a Budapest summit over the phone with the Russian leader, a day before meeting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Certain accounts suggested his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with insiders suggesting Trump had pressured him to relinquish large areas of eastern Ukraine as part of a settlement with Moscow.

Yet, on Monday the American president supported a peace initiative supported by Kyiv and European leaders to freeze the conflict on the present positions.

"Freeze the lines where it stands," he stated.

Moscow has consistently objected against pausing the current line of contact.

The Russian government was solely focused on "permanent resolution", Russia's foreign minister commented on Tuesday, suggesting that halting hostilities would simply constitute a temporary ceasefire.

Political Perspectives

The "underlying reasons" of the war required resolution, Lavrov stated, using Moscow's terminology for a set of extensive requirements that involve the acceptance of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the disarmament of the country – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its Western allies.

The Ukrainian president commented talks regarding the battle positions were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Moscow was "doing everything" to evade negotiations.

He further commented the sole subject that could cause Russia to "become engaged" was that of the supply of extended-range arms to Ukraine.

Weapons Discussions

Putin's unscheduled call with the US leader last Thursday occurred before rumors that the US was considering delivering extended-range cruise missiles to Ukrainian forces that could theoretically target Russian territory.

Zelensky asserted it was the weapons consideration that had pressured the Kremlin to enter into dialogue. The discussion regarding the missiles had emerged as a "valuable contribution" in international relations", he added.
